The U.S. military’s cryptography headquarters were located at Arlington Hall, a former girls’ school in Arlington, Virginia, which housed 121 bombe machines operated by WAVES officers. The codebreaking women living at Arlington Hall were given overcrowded barracks and forced to work long hours.

In addition to regular officer requirements, female codebreakers also needed strong math and pattern recognition skills. Many codebreakers were recent college graduates who had planned to become teachers, one of the few professions in which women could use their education.
